Power Saw

Picture
This is my first project of my fourth year using Rhino. When coming up with a project I knew I wanted to create some sort of mechanical object. I got the idea of a power saw from my home, where renovations are currently taking place using items like screwdrivers, wrenches, and of course a power saw. The next step I had to do is how I was going to design the actual saw. I based my saw on the circular saw from Google Images on the right. Because I could not see what was on the other side of the saw in the picture, I had to create my saw on what I thought was on the other side and by looking at the symmetry. The colors and textures were based off the image and the ground plane design was created when I was experimenting.

Problems and Solutions

My first problem was the edges of the actual saw. The shape of the ridges were not as easy as I thought. I knew I was going to use the  Polar Array command and then Boolean Difference, but I was using simply shaped triangles. Using triangles did not make it look realistic.

- I solved this by putting the image as a Bitmap on Rhino. I traced one of the ridges with a line then extruded the line to use Boolean
Difference.

Another problem I had was making the saw look realistic. Of course I used Brazil for the textures, but even in high quality I wasn’t impressed with it.

- My solution was to use lighting. I placed one spotlight above the saw and in front at an angle. With a few minor adjustments to the angle of
the lights, I got the saw to look pretty realistic.

Snow Globe

Picture
I created this snow globe to keep with the theme of Christmas. At first, I was going to create a gingerbread house, but it then developed into me creating this snow globe. The house was somewhat basic to make, except it took a while to get everything the right shape and make them fit correctly with all the other pieces of the gingerbread house. The glass was made from Brazil by making a sphere and increasing the transparency and reflectivety. The bottom of the snow globe is simple tubes and spheres. After changing the colors and textures and fixing the lighting I went on to create the animation. The animation is the shaking of the snow globe and having the snow swirl around like a real snow globe would. This was a problem because while using Bongo I needed the snow to have two different pivot points. One pivot would rotate the snow and the other pivot would move the snow as follows along with the actual snow globe to look like it is being shaken with snow swirling around. Because the two animations could not happen at the same time I had to work with something else.
I used the effects of Windows Movie Maker to have the animation look right. I created one video of just the snow globe moving back and forth. I then made another video of just the snow in the same spot that the glass of the snow globe was, so when the videos were put together it would look like the snow was in the glass. I faded each individual frame together so the snow globe and snow both showed at the same time. This is the reason the video has a faded look to it, instead of the pictures below which are most clear and are in high quality. The animation is shown below in a video a created in Windows Movie Maker.

Vacation House

Picture
This is my unfinished vacation house, made in Rhino 4.0, for Term 3. I set the house in a forest environment which made me focus on a particular type of house. I looked at specific forest vacation houses on the internet and got many results that were all quite similar. I started working on my first room, which was the living room. I knew from the start what I wanted in the room; a fireplace, a couple of sofas, a Plasma TV, a mini bar, and anything else that came up in my mind during the process. I made all these accesories and then created the room around with several beams that go across the ceiling. I made one wall with glass and wooden frames to make a sun room.
I then extended more rooms from this first room. I made the entrance to the house facing a staircase that leads to the second floor. The entrance room also has a glass sliding door that leads to the backyard. Above the room is a with a bathroom to the right. To the left of the entrance is an incomplete room which I plan to make the kitchen.
On the second floor is a master bedroom complete with a queen bed, side desks, a, and a Plasma TV. This room is connected to a a small deck that is set over the sun deck. I am now in the process of creating another bedroom, which will be the guest room. For Term 4, I will finish the rest of the rooms, render the materials of the house, and create the surronding environment.

Vacation House

Picture
This is my vacation house created in Rhino 4.0. It is a forest themed house, even though I was not able to create the environment around the house due to lack of time. The house has a sundeck, an entrance room, a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. On the right side of the building is a room with two windowed walls, as seen in the image to the left. The entrance is connected to the rest of the sundeck which leads to another door the other side of the house. Above the entrance is a circular window with a golden design. A small deck on the second floor can be accessed from the master bedroom through the sliding door. The portion on the left side of the house has a small hallway and another bedroom.
The actual creation of the house was pretty simple, but getting the textures and lighting right was difficult. I gave the house light wooden walls with a darker roof and made the sundeck a light tan color. There is one spotlight that is pointed at the house at an angle. The pictures below will give a different angle of the house as well as pictures of the living room and two bedrooms. I used about twenty different textures for the furniture inside the house and for the outside of the house.
